Looking back at my journey using Nix, I seem to have been equally radical on several topics over the past few years:

  • 2018: Due to irregular typing posture (left hand normal, right hand one-finger-typing), I switched directly to the Colemak keyboard layout. Since then, my keyboard has become automatically encrypted—no one else can type on my keyboard anymore.

  • 2019: Because my editing efficiency wasn’t high enough, I started using Vim and installed Vim plugins for all my editor IDEs (I’m not a Vim purist; I consider Vim to be a set of keybindings rather than the software itself). After forcing myself to get familiar with it, my editing efficiency increased dramatically. But where does coding get bottlenecked by editing efficiency? The bottleneck isn’t the hands, it’s the brain.

  • 2020: I wanted to find a time management method that suited me. Using software like RescueTime for automatic tracking introduced too much noise, and designing a schema in Excel or JSON to manually record felt too cumbersome. I accidentally discovered Org-Mode and found it very nice. The only downside is that it only works on Emacs. After considering the trade-offs, I thought it was worth the investment. Emacs itself is a deep hole; I didn’t want to start from scratch. At that point, my Vim skills came in handy! I joined the evil Doom Emacs camp, and Org Mode has become indispensable to me (What to do when not at a computer? Of course, when I’m not in front of a computer, I don’t need to keep meticulous records!)

  • 2021: I fell into the Nix/NixOS rabbit hole. That story was covered in the previous post.

  • 2022: Similar things happened. I’ll talk about them when I get a chance~

But there have been changes. Over the past year, my perspective on technical issues has shifted significantly. After all, technique should serve the underlying principles. The reasons are, first, a change in my role, and second, a change in how I view problems.

Question: “When at rest, I feel my mind is in good shape. But as soon as I encounter affairs, it becomes different. How so?”
The Master replied: “That is because you only know about quiet cultivation without applying the effort of self-discipline. In such a case, when facing affairs, you will collapse. A person must refine themselves through affairs; only then can they stand firm. Only then can they be steady in stillness and steady in motion.”
