I have a theory: every single day of a person’s life is a complete life in itself — born upon waking, and passing away as we fall asleep.

Today I spent four hours on the road to Songjiang to look at a house. The time on the road was so monotonous that now I feel I haven’t lived this day fully enough, and I’m reluctant to fall asleep.

Chen gave me an Olivera championship jersey!

I’ve been playing StarCraft 2 on and off since 2009, before the Chinese server even launched, all the way until last year. I’ve always been pretty bad—my highest rank on the ladder was a pathetic Diamond. When I came back to it last year, I only managed to claw my way up to Platinum. The game has changed a lot, and my hands have gotten a lot clumsier. My 60-key mini keyboard doesn’t even have F2.

In mid-February, I suddenly heard that Li Ge had won the world championship. I couldn’t believe it at first. Just like Hei Luobo said, who would have thought you’d be celebrating the New Year at 4 a.m.? I went back and watched all the replays from the quarter-finals to the finals. No, I watched them over and over. They were amazing. Everyone’s talked a lot about how tough the schedule was and how improbable it was to win the championship with a 0.37% probability. I want to share my own feelings.

StarCraft 2 has been with me for half of my life now. From a kid to a corporate slave facing a sometimes tough life, it feels like I’ve lost a lot along the way. After watching Li Ge’s—now Olivera’s—semi-final victory and his post-championship speech, I felt like I found something back through my sobbing. It’s the unquenchable passion, the persistence and confidence in the face of adversity, the courage to confront a powerful opponent, the calmness in a final match, and that damn run under the sunset!

Thanks to Chen for giving me this jersey, and thanks to Li Ge. I’ll never forget this toughest championship journey. They say, “There is a way to seek, and there is a fate to gain.” Maybe that’s true for many things. But people, like trees on a mountain, grow upward just to greet the lightning, even if it means burning out their entire life.

And after this life is over, we will face all the past hardships with a big laugh and say: Alright! Let’s do it again!

Amazing! Who would have thought such exquisite production could be completed in just 48 hours within a hackathon?

When I was a kid, I had an MP3 player—I think it was a Samsung one. It looked just like a big USB drive. I secretly bought it with my New Year lucky money, but I didn’t dare take it out at home to show off, or I’d get a beating.

I searched for songs on Baidu Music and downloaded them; for better sound quality I would always pick the largest file among the same song.

When I was outside, I’d thread the earphone cable from my pants pocket, through my T-shirt, and out the collar, or just let it dangle—feeling super cool.

At home, it was always hidden under my pillow. At night, I’d take it out and just admire it. Pure love—I loved it a whole lot. I didn’t even need to listen to music; just looking at it filled my mind with joy.

Coming home always brings back these happy memories. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year in advance—may you have simple, focused joy.

Looking back at my journey using Nix, I seem to have been equally radical on several topics over the past few years:

  • 2018: Due to irregular typing posture (left hand normal, right hand one-finger-typing), I switched directly to the Colemak keyboard layout. Since then, my keyboard has become automatically encrypted—no one else can type on my keyboard anymore.

  • 2019: Because my editing efficiency wasn’t high enough, I started using Vim and installed Vim plugins for all my editor IDEs (I’m not a Vim purist; I consider Vim to be a set of keybindings rather than the software itself). After forcing myself to get familiar with it, my editing efficiency increased dramatically. But where does coding get bottlenecked by editing efficiency? The bottleneck isn’t the hands, it’s the brain.

  • 2020: I wanted to find a time management method that suited me. Using software like RescueTime for automatic tracking introduced too much noise, and designing a schema in Excel or JSON to manually record felt too cumbersome. I accidentally discovered Org-Mode and found it very nice. The only downside is that it only works on Emacs. After considering the trade-offs, I thought it was worth the investment. Emacs itself is a deep hole; I didn’t want to start from scratch. At that point, my Vim skills came in handy! I joined the evil Doom Emacs camp, and Org Mode has become indispensable to me (What to do when not at a computer? Of course, when I’m not in front of a computer, I don’t need to keep meticulous records!)

  • 2021: I fell into the Nix/NixOS rabbit hole. That story was covered in the previous post.

  • 2022: Similar things happened. I’ll talk about them when I get a chance~

But there have been changes. Over the past year, my perspective on technical issues has shifted significantly. After all, technique should serve the underlying principles. The reasons are, first, a change in my role, and second, a change in how I view problems.

Question: “When at rest, I feel my mind is in good shape. But as soon as I encounter affairs, it becomes different. How so?”
The Master replied: “That is because you only know about quiet cultivation without applying the effort of self-discipline. In such a case, when facing affairs, you will collapse. A person must refine themselves through affairs; only then can they stand firm. Only then can they be steady in stillness and steady in motion.”

I started using NixOS in 2021. It all began when I was browsing Henrik, the author of DoomEmacs, on GitHub and stumbled upon his treasured NixOS configuration. At the time, I was like:

What? Declarative! Generational! IMMUTABLE! An operating system like this? I was totally blown away!!!

Later, in November of that year, I built a new PC and immediately installed it. Just like when I wanted to learn Vim and installed Vim plugins in all my editors/IDEs, refusing to exit until I got used to them, I dove headfirst into this fascinating new system. After suffering for a while, I still haven’t fully figured it out, but I’ve been enjoying it thanks to Henrik’s configuration. Since then, I’ve been syncing his updates from time to time.

Recently, I noticed that Henrik hasn’t updated his config for several months. I started to worry about his health, but today I dropped into the DoomEmacs Discord channel and saw him telling everyone that his internet was down…

Summer Time Rendering is just too good, too good.
I even dreamed about it before going to sleep last night.

The ending was exactly what I wanted most. I don’t understand why some people criticize it for being too perfect. Can’t perfect things exist in our imagination?
