Took advantage of no one being around and snuck a few small red flowers from the central garden to suck the nectar. On my way out, I embarrassingly walked straight into a couple who had been watching my sneaky behavior the whole time.

Yesterday I drove without my brain engaged, and the headlight burst. Got a busted right side of the car, lost the right to drive for five days.

Today I just want to slack off. I spent an hour scrolling through Gcores Feed, and it felt good.

Now I’m hungry, thinking about sneaking out for McDonald’s.

Tiefling sorcerer Phil Cavendish had an unusual Midwinter festival.

Three months ago, to cheer up his depressed mother, he packed his bags and set off for Waterdeep to find his willful older sister and persuade her to come home early—Alice Cavendish.

As an adopted child, Phil’s early years as a street performer had taught him that some people don’t appreciate the happiness they have—that they’d rather leave the comforts of a noble lady’s life to go out on their own.

But it was precisely this willful sister’s insistence that gave the orphan Phil, who had no regular meals on the streets over a decade ago, a warm and comfortable home. Phil’s feelings toward his sister were conflicted.

However, nearly a month of searching had exhausted Phil’s patience. Thinking of this, his anger toward his sister took over. Even! Ahem. Even Alice had chosen to worship Sune. The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. Without realizing it, he triggered a wild magic surge, and the chaotic power in his blood caused him to flash appear right in front of his sister, whom he was mentally scolding.

“Young man,” said the elder, “though you healed my wound, as an elder who has vowed to uphold good and eliminate evil, I must express my opinion: your attire seems inappropriate, especially in a place like the Red Eye Owl.”

“What I wear is none of your business, you lecherous old man! I kindly prayed to Lady Sune to heal you, and now you start lecturing me! You should know…”

When he found his sister, she was arguing with an elderly Aasimar named Allen. But none of that mattered—Phil’s sudden appearance startled them all. A girl wearing fine clothes but obviously out of place was sneaking close to Alice, and she stumbled at the shock, nearly bumping into Phil. The two arguing people didn’t know whom to look at.

“…Phil?” Alice asked, puzzled, looking at the embarrassed Phil.

“Hey! Ready to come home, my dear sister? Mom says she misses you.” Phil managed an awkward but polite smile.

“Don’t talk to me about that now, Philip! Allen, I’ll deal with you later! As for this lady, are you all right?” Alice stood up and helped up the sun elf named Conny, not noticing that she had been trying to pick her pocket.

That was the scene two months ago when this four-person party first assembled.

Midwinter festival was imminent. On this day, they planned to go for a stroll; the weather was cold. The four of them simultaneously looked at a gnome stall selling mulled wine nearby. They didn’t yet know what an unusual day this would be…

# Traveling with ZL (Part 1) – That Long-Haired Kid

A few days ago, I went far away to visit ZL for ten days. We chatted late into the night about all sorts of things that happened over the years, and it struck me to just write whatever comes to mind.

On November 14, 2019, at noon, I had just picked up my work lunchbox and opened Hearthstone, planning to play Battlegrounds while eating like usual. Suddenly it hit me – I remembered what my boss, who was thousands of miles away, told me yesterday: I was supposed to welcome the third member of our team, the first intern.

“Oh no, oh no, oh no, I completely forgot!” I instantly closed Hearthstone, put the lunchbox on the table, and walked to the entrance of the adjacent small office. I couldn’t help wondering what kind of person this kid would be.

Nervously, I peeked inside, and soon my eyes locked with a shy pair. Then his shoulder-length hair startled me. I kept my composure and tried to walk in gracefully to greet ZL. He clearly saw right through me – that shy look gave way to a warm smile, instantly dissolving the awkwardness.

Across from Tsinghua University there’s a really authentic Shaanxi noodle place; that’s where we ended up having lunch. The second shocking fact about ZL: despite being skinny, he could eat about three times as much as I could.

On the way there and back, we chatted on and off. ZL, who had just graduated from the nearby Beijing Forestry University, mentioned he was planning to take the TOEFL and go abroad for graduate school.

ZL is an incredibly emotional young man. Fresh out of college, he’s curious about everything, always ready to be inspired by anything. He’s smart and pure, yet doesn’t tie himself to any rigid morality – the kind of friend you’d feel comfortable discussing kinks with. To put it simply: Denji from Chainsaw Man is the perfect anime incarnation of ZL.

My time in Beijing was coming to an end as certain decisions fell into place. Three days later (exactly three days before five years ago today), ZL and I took the high-speed train to Suzhou, left Beijing for good, and said goodbye to our past lives. The gears of fate turned, the pendulum of time never stopped. And so began a legendary friendship.
